Parks Atkinson, principal of Nicaraguan Boat Builders, a native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, has been around water and boats all his life starting what was to become a boat-building career by working on surf boards. That was in the late 60s and early 70s when short surfboards came into vogue. Parks and his brother Frank cut down their long boards and refinished them and then did the same for all their friends. I finally got the boat out today for a sea trial. It ran great. With my 40 hp Yamaha 2-stroke I hit 29mph on Wiloughby Bay when it was flat, and in most chop it ran about 27-28. I hopped into 1 ft seas out in Ocean View and was able to sustain 24-25 skimming the wave tops. It was fun for a while, but I started to get beat up. High speed turns at wide open throttle were predicatble and smooth. I can't believe that the 40 hp pushes it like that. I think a 50 hp would be too much, unless hauling some serious gear. I figure I'll be at 21-22 mph with a few folks and beers, but that is great!
